The square root of 16
Four.
There are a lot of things in life that come in fours, whether its natural like the seasons, the elements, states of matter-- or manmade, like the different suits in a card deck, or TMNT coincidentally having four turtles as their main cast.
It's silly to know that if you multiply a number by itself you create what is known as a "perfect square." Squares has four right angles (Before someone tries to tell me that four sides doesn't prove it's a square).
Despite the ideal that nothing is perfect; what's more perfect than two of the exact same thing? A direct copy of itself... and I think that's where there becomes a sense of competition between things that are similar but not the exact same. Books within the same genre- you love some, you hate some, but at the end of the day you will still say you love that genre. Food groups, you might love pasta but dislike pizza; that doesn't mean that Italian food is bad as a whole.
I came to debate with myself one day-- on whether or not I wished to stand out from a crowd or blend in. If everyone was like one another and everything had no differences, what makes something perfect if it it is merely the normalcy around the world? If everyone changed themselves to be like this one person who deemed themselves unique- then no one would be unique. So, why not stand out? If no one else could be you- then you become your own version of perfect; something so unique that you'd need an exact copy of yourself to beat you.
So, how can I apply this to the things I'm currently working on?
Even if I want to be within the market range of what other people are designing...I want it to feel like it is ours. Something that people can have an almost automatic connect that it is from our brand. I say almost because we hope to cater to different niches despite the argument of discouraging businesses to "spread yourself thin" and cater to too many people. In my eyes, these people are often in mixed niches (including myself) so why create multiple brands for specific niches under one name when it can just be under one brand. (Just my thoughts)
With the novel I am writing I can often lose myself in the writer block because it feels like some less copy of a probably best selling book already out there. It's under the same genre- but they don't have my characters, their backstories, their reasons or inspirations all jumbled together. After I go through proper editing, into the best version of itself it can be- Then for a first novel? I'd say it would be perfect.
I enjoyed your post which has left me with things to think about today as I try and work and catch up on the Challenge. Have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of the event.
ReplyDeletei can identify with that self-debate you mention, for i find myself in the same position many times.. and i do want to find that balance where i am still me but also blend in seamlessly, you know?
